Food Medication Interactions
Written by Zaneta M. Pronsky, MS, RD, FADA and Dean Elbe BSc BCPP.
The Food Medication Interactions reference book provides a list of nutrient interactions for a number of medications, in addition to how those medications effect metabolism, when they should take, if they should be taken with food or on an empty stomach, how or if blood levels are effected, side effects, contraindications, etc. Majority of this information can be found online, however if you want one go-to resource, then you will get a lot of use out of this book.
Mosby’s Manual of Diagnostic and Laboratory Tests.
Written by Kathleen Deska Pagana, PhD, RN, Timothy J. Pagana, MD, FACS and Theresa Noel Pagana, MD, FAAEM
The Mosby’s Manual of Diagnostic and Laboratory Tests is hands down one of the best resources you can have for clinical rotations. This book explains why certain labs are used for specific medical conditions, normal lab values/ranges based on age, what can cause levels to increase or decrease, medications that may interfere with lab results, etc. This book is a bit dense weighing 4 pounds! (trust I weighed it myself out of my own curiosity) However, its such a great resource you won’t mind lugging it around.
Nutrition Therapy and Pathophysiology
Written by Marcia Nelms, and Kathryn P Sucher.
Nutrition Therapy and Pathophysiology is a great textbook to keep for your clinical rotations, because you will likely want to reference it more than once. This book reviews the nutrition care process for multiple medical conditions including heart disease, liver disease, endocrine conditions, kidney disease, respiratory diseases, etc. I referenced this book during my internship when I worked on my case study or just needed a quick refresher on specific medical conditions.
Dietetic Intern Guidebook
Written by Felicia Hendricks, RD
Yes you read that correctly. I wrote the Dietetic Intern Guidebook: An Uncomplicated and Practical Guide to Nutrition Intervention. If you’re looking for a quick and easy reference on how to complete a nutrition assessment and appropriate nutrition intervention on patients diagnosed with diabetes, hypertension, or chronic kidney disease, then this is definitely a must have book for your clinical rotation.
